The Power of Words

Words -- they are the basic unit of language and the currency we use to communicate with one another. Once formed, words become life in written and spoken form.

As someone who enjoys writing and reading and talking (I'm a bit of a chatterbox), you can guess rightly that I love words. For some people, words aren't that important, after all, actions speak louder than words, right?

That may be true, actions may indeed speak louder than words, but,

"Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."

Proverbs 18:21

The power of words and affirmations

Words are powerful.

Words heal.

Words fulfill.

Words kill.

Words destroy.

Words sow.

Words illuminate.

Wisdom and knowledge are harvested in our words.

I love words. I love how words have the power to change and affect situations, change the tone of the room, uplift the environment, and empower and embolden someone.

Personally, I try not to mess around with words. Perhaps that's why one of my love languages is words of affirmation. We express ourselves with our words; that’s why I write and blog. I write to encourage, to empower and to uplift. I write to spread love and joy. I write to remind (even if it's just one person besides myself) that we are capable to be the people we desire to be.

Your words can become your reality, don't forget that. If you say something enough times, you will begin to believe it, and start acting accordingly.

So speak ... use your words to speak life into your situations and walk with new bold confidence as you declare good things for yourself. Encourage yourself, friends, and even strangers with your words. Some people rarely hear a compliment or nice words being directed at them. Tell someone something you like about their personality. Praise someone for their gifts. It might just make their day.

Sometimes it can be difficult to think good things about yourself or affirm positive things over yourself or your life when you're not used to hearing other people direct good words to you. While it is nice to hear people say nice things to you, try not to rely solely on other people to compliment you. Speak words of love and kindness over your own life. People are easily caught up in their own lives, personal situations and problems that they don't have a moment to stop and think about other people, so don't take it personally if people aren't rushing to compliment you all the time.

Putting aside other people, sometimes it's not actually other people who aren't directing good words towards you. Sometimes, we speak negatively to ourselves. I'm here to tell you to cancel those thoughts right now, every - single - one - of - them. I'm here to serve as a reminder that ...

YOU are good enough

&

YOU are smart enough

&

YOU are more than capable to achieve what you've set your mind and heart to

&

YOU can live that phenomenal life you've been praying and believing for

Imagine this, imagine that you become all the things you speak over yourself? What would your life look like? I don't know about you, but I'd rather declare great and amazing things over myself and my life with the belief that those words will come to fruition and become my reality. So do yourself a favour ... think about the person you are now, the person you're becoming and the person you want to be?

Thought about it?

If you haven't started doing this, then let today be the first and beginning of encouraging yourself with the words you need to hear. You don't always need to hear people tell you that you're great, or amazing or talented - tell yourself and believe it! Believe in your sauce! It's not about arrogance or being cocky, but believing in yourself, your abilities, and what you bring to the proverbial table.

Every morning, gather the strength to tell yourself that you are more than a conqueror, and you are wonderfully and fearfully made. Make an affirmations and declarations list and read it to yourself. Set the tone for your day by telling yourself the things you've written on your affirmations list. Perhaps go one step further and record yourself saying these things and play it back to yourself in the morning as you're getting ready for your day. Speak the language of love and grace over your life.

So as you're reading this, take a moment to think before you speak to yourself and before you speak to another person. Think about how your words might affect your day and others. Think about how your words can bring healing. Be slow to speak, think about your words. They have the power to change and heal any situation.

The Word of God

If we're talking about words, we can't forget about God's word.

"In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men." John 1:1-4

The kingdom of God is voice-activated. When God speaks, it becomes so.

And God said "Let there be light: and there was light" Genesis 1:3

With God's word comes authority and influence:

  • When Moses followed God's instructions, he led the Israelites out of Egypt;

  • Noah built his arc, after following God's instruction of the impending flood to come.

  • Abraham, at 99 years old obeyed God's word and was willing to sacrifice his child as a burnt sacrifice; God then made him the father of all nations ---- "... through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” Genesis 22:18

Find yourself a bible or read the bible app to find out for yourself the beauty, power and authority that lies in God's word.

God's word heals.

God's word nourishes.

God's word cleanses.

God's word stregthens.

God's word resurrects.

So it is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. Isaiah 55:1
